Puerto Morelos: the anti-Cancun

Puerto Morelos is what the Riviera Maya looked like before the mega-resorts: a real fishing town halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, built around a plaza, a pier, and a leaning lighthouse that a hurricane tilted in 1967 and the town decided to keep as its symbol.

Where it is & getting there

Twenty-five minutes south of Cancun Airport. Options: ADO bus to Cancun then colectivo, direct taxi (~$40-50 USD), or rental car. The town is split in two: the pueblo (beach side, where everything happens) and the colonia on the inland side of the highway.

What to do

• Snorkel the reef: Puerto Morelos sits inside a National Reef Park on the Mesoamerican Reef — the second-largest reef system on Earth. Local co-ops run cheap, excellent two-stop snorkel tours from the pier. Turtles, rays, and technicolor fish practically guaranteed.
• Ruta de los Cenotes: ten minutes inland, a road strung with swimmable cenotes — open-air ones, cave ones, zipline ones. Verde Lucero and Kin Ha are local favorites.
• Eat seafood at the beach: tikin xic (Mayan grilled fish), ceviche, and the famous beachfront fish shacks.
• Time your trip with the town's festivals — including the Caribbean Beer Festival every April, which takes over the main park with 50+ craft beer taps.

When to go

December-April is dry season (sunny, 27-31°C). April specifically hits the sweet spot: peak-season weather without peak-season crowds or prices. Hurricane season runs June-November; September-October are the wet months.

Where to stay

Small hotels and guesthouses in the pueblo put you walking distance from everything — book early for April weekends. Budget travelers find good hostels; families and groups do well with vacation rentals in the colonia at half the beach-side price.
